“Who Attacked the Head Guard?” pt. 2 (Volume 6, Story 10)

Previously, on “The Adventures of the Three Heroes”…

   Kate has been called in to help with a case regarding the safety of Reginald, the head guard in Milo and Isa’s town. Someone has attacked Reginald, and along with help from the new guard Clint, Kate has discovered that one of the other guards is responsible for attacking Reginald. But the question remains, who is responsible?

And now…

    Kate and Clint walked over to where Damian’s house was. Milo gave them the address, so now that they knew where Damian lived, they could talk to his family and see if they could get more information that could help them narrow down the one responsible.

    Neither of them suspected Damian himself, but if Damian’s family had anything to say about any of the other suspects, it could help them narrow down who it could be.

    When they made it to the house, Kate knocked on the door. A little boy with light brown hair answered. He was wearing a red and white long sleeved shirt with a pig on it, shorts, and red shoes.

    “I don’t know you! Go away!” he shouted in panic.

    “Zachary, that was rude!” a woman’s voice said from inside.

    A woman with long blonde hair and green eyes came out. She was wearing a long sleeved pink shirt, jeans with a belt, and sneakers.

    “Oh, hello Clint,” she greeted him and Kate.

    “Hi Aria,” Clint greeted her.

    “Damian’s not here. He’s working today, since he’s filling in for Captain Reginald until he recovers,” said Aria.

    “We know. We’re actually here to talk to you,” said Clint.

    “Really? Well, why don’t you two come in,” said Aria.

    She walked Kate and Clint into the house. Zachary ran ahead of them and went into the living room, where he met up with a little girl. She looked to be about three years younger than Zachary. She had blonde hair tipped with brown at the ends tied up in ponytails. Her eyes were the color black, and she wore a white and light blue dress with light blue sneakers.

    “Hi Mister Clint!” the little girl said excitedly.  She ran over to Clint and gave him a hug. Clint returned the hug.

    “Hi Rebecca,” he told her.

    “I’m sorry I was mean earlier…” said Zachary.

    “It’s alright,” Kate told him.

    “So Clint, who is your friend here?” asked Aria.

    Kate extended her hand out and said, “My name is Katelyn, but you can just call me Kate.”

    Aria shook hands with Kate.

    “It’s a pleasure to meet you Miss Kate,” she told her.

    “Just call me Kate. No need to address me formally,” said Kate.

    Aria smiled and said, “Okay. So… what brings you two by?”

    “Well, you already know this, but Captain Reginald was attacked. We are working on the case, and we found out that a guard attacked him,” said Clint.

    “But before you freak out, no, we don’t think it’s your husband. I don’t think he would want to hurt Reginald. We came to talk to you to see if you have anything about the other guards that could be helpful for this,” said Kate.

    “Well, I’m relieved that you don’t think it was my husband. Damian was here this morning. I woke up, started making breakfast with him, and Zachary and Rebecca woke up. We all woke up early so that we could eat together before he had to go to work,” said Aria.

    The three adults went to go sit in the living room and talk, while Zachary and Rebecca went upstairs to play.

    “The other guards that are suspects are Weston, Jake, Kevin, and Hunter. Do you have anything about them that might be helpful?” asked Kate.

    “Well, I’ve only met one of the other guards, Hunter. He seems… okay. He gets along with Damian, and he stops by, but lately, we don’t want him coming down for visits…” said Aria.

    “Why not?” asked Clint.

    “Well… at one point, we noticed that some stuff around here has been missing. We’re having trouble looking for things. I’m sure that we’ve misplaced our items, but… the other day, last time Hunter came for a visit, Zachary told me that his lunch money is gone. I had to make him a lunch because when I looked in my wallet, some of my spare bills were gone,” said Aria.

    “You think Hunter could be stealing money from you guys?” asked Kate.

    “Hmph! Wouldn’t surprise me. Hunter’s a jerk to me just because I’m new…” said Clint.

    “I don’t know if Hunter is stealing from us, but whatever happens, I just hope that my husband isn’t blamed for what happened to Captain Reginald. I know them, and Captain Reginald and Damian are good friends. They wouldn’t dare hurt one another,” said Aria.

    “Don’t worry Aria, we know it’s not him. We’re going to figure this out,” said Kate.

    Aria smiled nervously and said, “Thank you.”

    A short while later, Clint and Kate left the house. They were walking back to the palace, and as they did, they were discussing what they knew so far.

    “I think it might’ve been Hunter. But then again, just because he’s a jerk doesn’t mean it can be him. It does seem too obvious,” said Kate.

    “You want to tell Milo and Isa what you think?” asked Clint.

    “I don’t want to assume anything until I’m completely sure. Because if I’m wrong and I make the accusation, then Reginald’s attacker will still be on the loose. I think we need more clues. But before we continue looking, I want to go check on Reginald. He may be in a coma, but I want to see him,” said Kate.

    “Well, your call. I’m just the guard who’s helping you,” said Clint.

    Kate gave him a smile and said, “You’re not just a guard helping me out. You’re my partner, and my friend.”

    Clint was a little surprised to hear what Kate said.

    “R-really?” he asked her.

    “Of course, Clint. You’re my friend, and I mean it when I say it,” she told him.

    Clint managed to smile nervously.

    The two of them returned to the palace. When they did, Milo and Isa asked to talk to Clint, so he stayed behind while Kate went to go check on Reginald. When she returned to the room, she saw that Gill and T.T. were there watching over him instead of Aiden and Maya.

    “Hey guys, where’s Aiden and Maya?” she asked them.

    “They’re at home getting some sleep. We agreed to take shifts with them to help them give breaks. Isa still thinks Reginald shouldn’t be alone while he’s in a coma, at least until the bad guy’s caught,” said Gill.

    “Gill said you’re working on the case. You find anything?” asked T.T.

    “A guard is responsible, but we can’t figure out anything else,” said Kate.

    She let out a sigh and looked at Reginald, who was still unconscious. She felt like crying when she saw her friend in pain, but she felt relieved since she could hear him breathing.

    Kate walked over and gently held Reginald’s hand.

    “Don’t worry, Reginald. I’ll find who did this to you so that you’ll be safe. We’re here for you,” she whispered.

    Suddenly, Kate felt dizzy. She let go of Reginald’s hand and stepped back, stumbling a bit.

    “Kate, are you okay?” asked T.T.

    Kate didn’t say anything. She could feel her head spinning as she started to see something.

    “Huh? Where am I?” said Kate.

    She looked around. It looked like she was outside in the castle gardens, but it was early before dawn.

    Kate looked down at her hands and noticed that they were glowing white. It was like she’s a ghost.

    “Wait a second… my Dimensional Scream triggered… It’s showing me a flashback, which means…” she told herself.

    She heard footsteps from nearby. Kate looked in the direction they came from and saw that it was Reginald. He looked healthy and well, but he looked a little sad. She heard him sigh.

    “Man, after how those bullies treated Aiden yesterday… I can’t sleep. Aiden’s like my brother, and no matter what I do, I can’t seem to help him out enough… I wish I could help him more…” said Reginald.

    Kate wished she could talk to Reginald, but she couldn’t. This was just a flashback, so she couldn’t talk to him.

    But even when she expected it, it still horrified her. She knew he was going to get attacked.

    However, she noticed that not one, but two people came up from behind Reginald. Two guards to be exact.

    Kate was shocked to see who the two guards where.

    Hunter and Kevin.

    Hunter swung his axe and attacked Reginald. The head guard tried to let out a cry of pain, but Kevin covered his mouth up to stop him.

    “No! Stop!” Kate shouted in panic.

    It didn’t make a difference. She was only looking at the past, and she wasn’t a part of it.

    She had no choice but to watch in horror as she saw the two guards attack her friend. But as the sun began to rise, they stopped.

    “Crap! It’s dawn! Someone’s going to see us!” said Hunter.

    “Dude, your uniform is bloody! They’ll know it was you!” said Kevin.

    “Oh crap!” said Hunter.

    The two of them dropped Reginald and ran to the forest. Since she couldn’t help Reginald, Kate ran after them. She watched as she saw them dig up a chest buried under the dirt and put the axe and Hunter’s bloody uniform inside it. They also pulled out a spare set of a uniform and Hunter changed into that.

    “Good thing I left my old uniform that I can’t fit into in here. I told you we should’ve stolen clothes from Damian, or that stupid Aiden kid!” said Hunter.

    “I know, but we have to go! We’re night guards, so we could be in big trouble if they suspect us!” said Kevin.

    Kate watched them run back to the town, but in a different direction. As they ran away, however, Kate noticed that Kevin dropped something.

    A bright light suddenly flashed, and she found herself leaving the flashback.

    “Kate, are you okay?” she heard a voice.

    Kate blinked a few times to see that Gill and T.T. were giving her worried looks.

    “Sorry, but I gotta keep looking for clues! Just keep Reginald safe!” she told them.

    She quickly rushed out without saying another word. She was ready to keep looking, but that’s when she saw Clint talking to Milo and Isa. She couldn’t help but ease drop on the conversation.

    “Have you guys figured out who is responsible yet?” asked Milo.

    “No. We’re still trying to figure it out. We don’t’ want to assume anything yet,” said Clint.

    “We understand, but… I just hope we can find out it was and lock them up so that Reginald’s safe,” said Isa.

    “I know, Founder. We’re doing our best,” said Clint.

    “Alright Clint. You’re dismissed. You can get back to work,” said Milo.

    Milo and Isa left. When they left, Kate ran to Clint.

    “Clint, come with me. I think I know where we can find another clue,” said Kate.

    She grabbed Clint by the arm and quickly led him out of the palace.

    A few minutes later, they were back by where they dug up the chest. Since Kate didn’t know exactly where she saw Hunter and Kevin run off to in her flashback, she had her Pansage come back out of his Pokeball and look around.

    It didn’t take Pansage long to sniff out a clue. He led them to a spot where she saw Kevin accidentally drop something.

    Clint walked over and picked up the object. It was a journal of some sort, but when he opened it up, he did not like the entries that he saw inside.

    “Uh… you may not like these…” he said.

    Kate took a look in the journal. There weren’t regular entries. There are angry scribbles of words to express anger towards Reginald, and even death threats.

    “Why would they hate him like this?” said Kate.

    “They?” asked Clint.

    “Clint, it was two guards. Hunter and Kevin,” said Kate.

    “But… how can you be sure?” asked Clint.

    “I’ll explain how I found out later, but right now, we need to tell Milo and Isa,” said Kate.

    They hurried to the palace and found Milo and Isa checking on Reginald.

    “Milo, Isa, we need to talk to you guys. But can we discuss this in another room?” said Kate.

    “We will, but right now, Gill and T.T. need a break. Aiden and Maya aren’t back yet,” said Isa.

    “I can stay with Reginald until you guys come back,” said Clint.

    “You fine with it?” asked Kate.

    “Yeah. Besides, I think you can explain things better,” said Clint.

    “What do you mean?” asked Milo.

    Kate didn’t say anything. She just pulled Milo and Isa out of the room and down the hallway to another room. When she was sure that no one was around, she quickly filled them in on what she figured out.

    She told them about how she had the flashback, how Clint found the journal, and how it may have connected to Reginald.

    “I… I don’t understand… I know that Hunter and Kevin don’t really do their jobs, but that’s why I gave them the night shifts. Why would they attack Reginald?” asked Milo.

    “Reginald… asked me if any of the guards were ever disrespectful to us, but when I asked him if any of them were disrespectful to him, I didn’t think that he’d lie and say no…” said Isa.

    “We better pull those two in and finish interrogating them,” said Milo.

    Suddenly, they heard a shout come from down the hall.

    “Huh? Clint!?” said Kate.

    She, Milo, and Isa quickly ran back to the room where Reginald was resting. To their shock, they saw that Hunter and Kevin were there to. Hunter was by Reginald, and he had his sword out, ready to stab Reginald and finish killing him. Kevin had Clint hostage, but he had his sword out, ready to slit Clint’s throat.

    “So you ratted us out… we heard you talk to the Founder and Successor…” said Kevin.

    “You ratted us out, so you have to pick which one you want to save!” said Hunter.

    “No! Leave them alone! If you’re going to be mad at someone, be mad at me! Please, leave Reginald and Clint alone! They’re my friends!” Kate cried in panic. “Kill me instead!”

    Kevin gave her a malicious grin.

    “You would really sacrifice yourself to save an unconscious guard and a newbie? How pathetic are you?!” he taunted her.

    “I would take a bullet for them if it meant saving my friends! Please, don’t kill them! I’ll let you do whatever you want to me!” said Kate.

    “Kate, no!” said Isa.

    She and Milo tried to step forward, but they couldn’t because Hunter and Kevin only moved their swords closer to Reginald and Clint.

    Kate formed a worried look, but she saw her Pansage start quietly climbing through the window sill. He gave her a nod, and she knew what to do.

    “So you’d give up your life for these two idiots’ lives? Not happening. Who do want to live?” said Hunter.

    “Kate, save Captain Reginald!” Clint said with a panicked look.

    “I’ve made up my mind…” Kate said sadly.

    “Oh yeah, and that’s that?” Kevin taunted her.

    Kate frowned. She shouted, “Use bite on Kevin!”

    “Huh?” said Kevin and Hunter.

    Pansage charged at Kevin. He used the move bite on Kevin, biting him hard on his head. Kevin shouted in panic, letting go of Clint and dropping his sword.

    Before Hunter could hurt Reginald, Kate quickly did a spin dash and tackled him, pushing him out the window. Unfortunately, she fell out as well. Both of them landed on the ground in front of the palace. Hunter got just slightly injured, but Kate landed on both feet.

    Milo and Isa quickly grabbed Kevin, but the bad guard pulled out an ender pearl. He threw it out the window, and teleported out to the gardens.

    “Kate…” said Clint.

    He pulled out his sword and started running out.

    “Clint, come back!” shouted Milo.

    “Stay with Reginald! I got it!” Isa instructed him.

    She pulled out her two iron swords and ran after Clint.

    Outside in the gardens, Kate pulled out her sword, ready to fight Hunter and Kevin. The two evil guards stood away from each other so that they would get Kate from two different sides. They looked furious.

    “We thought that Damian could take the blame, which was why we started that rumor, but no! You and the newbie had to figure out it was us!” Hunter shouted.

    “We’re going to lose our jobs now, and go to jail! But before we have to go into the slammer, our only wish is to get our revenge. We were going to let you choose who to save, but… thanks for offering yourself instead…” said Kevin.

    Kate frowned and shouted, “I’m not going down without a fight! I won’t let you hurt my friends!”

    Hunter and Kevin only charged for her. Kate dodged their attack and pushed Kevin back. But she got into a sword fight with Hunter.

    Kevin tried to sneak up behind Kate, but an angry voice stopped him.

    “Leave my friend alone!”

    It was Clint. He ran over and slashed his sword at Kevin. Their swords clashed, and the two got into their own duel.

    “Both of you are dying! And hopefully the captain dies in his coma!” shouted Hunter.

    “Not gonna happen!” Kate shouted back.

    She kicked him back and tried to hit him with her sword, but Hunter dodged her attack. Hunter pulled out an ender pearl and teleported away before Kate could try hitting him again.

    “Just try and hit us!” Kevin taunted.

    He pulled out a potion and drank it. Clint tried to hit him, but Kevin jumped out of the way, because he got a jump boost from the potion.

    “Cowards! Come fight us!” Clint shouted.

    “You think you’re the only ones with abilities? You’re wrong!” shouted Kate.

    She jumped up high and formed some energy balls from her sword. She quickly tossed them at Hunter and Kevin. The two of them jumped to doge, but she expected them to do that. She quickly did another spin dash at them, and knocked them down to the ground.

    When Hunter and Kevin were down, Clint charged at them. He ended up dueling them, two on one, but before they could over power him, Isa made it. She helped Clint and Kate fight the two bad guards. They were able to overpower them as Hunter ran out of ender pearls and Kevin’s potion wore off.

    But Hunter and Kevin weren’t giving up. Kevin pulled out a splash potion and threw it at his and Hunter’s feet.  They both turned invisible.

    “Just great…” Isa muttered.

    Clint only smirked. He had an idea on how to make Hunter and Kevin give up their position. He pulled out his rose quartz medallion and waved it up in the air.

    “I’ve got a girl’s necklace!” he shouted.

    “Ha! You even admit it, freak!” they heard Hunter shout.

    “He’s got a girl’s necklace?!” they heard Kevin shout.

    Taking the chance, Isa and Kate charged for them. Isa tackled Hunter and knocked him out with her swords, while Kate took down Kevin.

    Once Hunter and Kevin were visible again, the group saw that they were unconscious. Isa cuffed them up, and the two guards were going to jail.

    After Hunter and Kevin were sent to the prison, Kate and Clint went to go check in on Reginald. Despite how everyone else insisted that Reginald was going to be okay, Kate used her healing powers to heal Reginald and help the head guard wake up faster. When Reginald woke up, he was greeted with a hug from Aiden.

    “You’re okay, Reggie… You’re okay…” Aiden whispered.

    Reginald didn’t say anything. He just returned the hug, holding back the tears. After he and Aiden let go, Milo and Isa filled in Reginald on what happened. Kate would’ve told him what happened, but she was unconscious because she healed Reginald.

    After learning that it was Hunter and Kevin who attacked him, Reginald broke down into tears and told Milo and Isa that the two former guards hated him, and they even gave him a hard time during his work even before they left Sky City. He even told them that his job stressed him out a few times, but he made himself deal with it because he wanted to be there to help the others, especially Aiden, whenever they needed his help.

    Isa told him that she was glad that he told her. She would give him a few more days to rest and recover, and rearrange his schedule so that it wouldn’t stress him out anymore.

    And now that Hunter and Kevin were locked up, they couldn’t hurt Reginald again.

    Sometime later, Kate woke up after passing out from healing Reginald. After she woke up, she was greeted by Reginald, who gave her a hug and thanked her for helping him.

    “You okay?” she asked him when they let go.

    “I’ll be okay… I’m a little shaken after what happened… but Hunter and Kevin are locked up. They can’t do anything, and I’m glad that I told Isa and Milo about my problems…” said Reginald. He gave her a sad smile.

    Kate only smiled back and said, “We’re here if you need us, Reginald.”

    After making sure that Reginald was okay, Kate told everyone goodbye and was ready to head home.

    When she told goodbye to Clint, it was a little awkward to tell him goodbye.

    “Hey Kate,” he told her.

    “Hey Clint. I’m heading home. I just wanted to say goodbye,” she said.

    “Oh, I can walk you home,” he told her.

    “I appreciate it, but I don’t live in town,” said Kate, smiling nervously.

    “Oh… well…”

    Clint couldn’t finish talking.

    “It’s okay. We’ll see each other again, because we’re friends,” Kate told him with a smile.

    Clint smiled back and said, “Really?”

    “Yeah. I’ll see you again sometime. That’s a promise,” she told him.

    “Thanks Kate. So… I’ll see you around?”

    “Yeah. I’ll see you around. I need to go home. I’ll see you again, Clint.”

    “Okay. Bye Kate.”

    “Bye Clint.”

    After bidding farewell to Clint, Kate started to walk away from the town. That way, when she makes it out, she can open the book and teleport back to her world.

    But as she walked on, she didn’t know that two people were watching her.

    “You got our friends locked up… you’re going to pay for that…” said one of them.

    “Next time you come to town, we’ll be watching you…” said the second one.
