Chapter 6: The Search

Upstairs, the girls remained hiding in their spots in their room. Now that they were locked in, they didn’t dare come out of their hiding spots.

            “Something’s coming!” whispered Peach.

The four of them heard more footsteps slowly heading their way. Judging by how many footsteps could be heard, there was more than one person in the group heading their way. To their horror, one of them knocked gently on their door.

“Peach! Daisy! Rosalina! Toadette!” a voice whispered from the other side.

“Mario? Is that you?!” Peach whispered loud enough, so he could hear her.

“Yeah. I’m here with the rest of the guys,” said Mario.

“Mario! Please get us out of here! We’re locked in here!” whispered Peach.

As soon as she said that, Mario tried to get the door open. She was right, it was locked tight. But while Mario tried to get the door open, Yoshi pulled out a piece of chalk and said, “There might be a circle in there.”

“Oh right! Peach, is there a weird looking, red circle on the floor in there?” he asked the girls.

Peach, Daisy, Rosalina, and Toadette looked at the red circle Daisy found earlier. “Yeah…” Daisy said, nervously.

Yoshi rolled the piece of chalk from under the door crack so that the girls could get it. “Cross it off with this piece of chalk,” he said.

Rosalina picked up the chalk and crossed it off with the chalk. A few seconds after she crossed it off, the same horrible noise went off for a second, like the same one in the basement.

            “What was that?!” cried Toadette.

That’s when the door to their room opened up. The girls say the guys standing outside their rom, with worried looks.

“Mario!” cried Peach. She ran to him and gave him a hug, while Toadette did the same thing with Toad and Yoshi.

“We need to get out of here!” said Rosalina. “I don’t care if it’s cold or the fact that we have no gas in our car. I just want to get out of here!”

“We can’t escape, unless we kill more of those red circles with chalk. We already killed one in the basement, so that’s two down,” said Luigi.

“Well, it did open the door after we destroyed it with the chalk, so I guess that must be so. We better look around some more, but we have to stay together and be as quiet as possible,” said Daisy.

As his friends started to walk back down to the first floor to search for more circles, Mario started to get the funny feeling that there was going to be a twist of some sort.

Why do I… feel like this is familiar in a way? And I feel like after we kill all those circles, there’s gonna be… a twist. It always happens in the movies, so will it happen in real life to…’ thought Mario.

Mario thought about sharing his hunch with the others, but they were already frightened enough with the fact that they were trapped in the lodge, and Johnny was somewhere, waiting them out.

The group made it back to the first floor and began to search the rooms for anymore of the red circles. They quietly made their way around the lodge, careful not to make any noise and let Johnny know where they were, since they knew he was after them.

They started their search by going through kitchen and the library. Nothing but dusty old books and paintings with cobwebs were found in the library. However, what made their trip through the library eerie was when they heard Johnny’s voice speak to them from somewhere else in the lodge.

“Thy hath sinned. Thou aren’t holly. Thy hath sinned…” they heard Johnny’s voice speak in an eerie tone.

“I am so scared, I think I’m gonna wet myself…” Luigi whispered. He shook as he tried to walk around.

“When we get home, I think I’ll have trouble sleeping for a week…” said Rosalina nervously.

“Nothing here in the library, so let’s head to the kitchen,” whispered Mario.

The group quietly made their way to the kitchen like mice. When they made it in the kitchen, they saw nothing there. Johnny wasn’t in sight, but the group remained quiet just in case.

Peach and Daisy started to look through the cabinets, and ended up finding another circle on the floor. Luigi handed them a piece of chalk, and Daisy crossed off the circle. Once again, the horrible noise went off for just a second.

Mario looked through the cupboards, and found a steak knife. Though he was unsure if it was going to work against Johnny, he took it anyway. He at least wanted some way to arm himself in case the madman came for him.

“Can’t we get a weapon to?” Toad whispered.

“I found two more steak knives. Leave me and Daisy to handle them since we’ve done some sparing practice,” said Yoshi. He handed one to Daisy.

“Mario, look at this painting,” whispered Peach.

Mario quietly made his way to where Peach was. She was at the entrance to the dining room, and she was looking at a painting. In the painting, Johnny was standing with a woman his age, and a little girl, probably age five or six, was standing between them.

“I think there’s a reason to why Johnny’s crazy and wants us dead…” she whispered.

Mario pulled out Sarah’s diary and the note they found in the basement.

“We found this in the basement. We think that Johnny had a family, like the one of him in this painting, but after his wife died, he went insane. And maybe he became an evil demon to take out anyone because he couldn’t handle losing his wife,” said Mario.

“I get it that he lost someone, but that doesn’t mean he should take his pain out on others by killing them…” Peach whispered with a fearful look.

“You gotta think he’s crazy, and then you end up seeing the daughter’s perspective. In her diary, she sounded so frightened when she wrote the entries…” said Mario.

“We have to finish off those circles, so we don’t end up like anyone he’s killed…” said Peach.

The group left the kitchen and searched the dining room. There weren’t many places to cover, but even under the table and in the cabinets, there were no red circles.

“Any other rooms on this floor?” asked Daisy.

Luigi looked down the hallway and saw one. He read the sign next to the closed door that led to the room and said, “’Cellar’. Oh god. I don’t want to go to the cellar.”

“Me neither. The basement was already creepy, just like the movies, so chances are the cellar’s gonna be just as creepy as the basement…” said Yoshi.

“But we need to look in there. There might be a circle in there…” said Daisy.

She took a piece of chalk and had her steak knife ready just in case. While Daisy walked over to the cellar door on her own, the others remained back at the other end of the hallway.

Something’s amiss. And it’s not just the fact that there’s a demon trying to kill us. Why hasn’t Johnny showed his face while we’re trying to kill his circles? Surely, if we need to destroy them to escape, he would try to stop us…’ thought Mario.

As Mario thought this, he didn’t watch Daisy as she bravely made her way to the cellar. The others were watching Daisy, so they didn’t notice that Mario was deep in thought.

Daisy made it to the cellar door.  She quickly opened it up, and backed up in case something tried to jump at her. Nothing came at her. The cellar was empty, except for some old, dried blood stains on the walls, and a red circle on the floor.

“I was right,” said Daisy. She quickly crossed it off with the chalk. The horrible noise went off, but she grinned and said, “You don’t scare me anymore.”

“You guys think that was the last one?” asked Toad.

“There’s one piece of chalk left, so there might be one more,” said Toadette, as she looked in the box.

“Guys, I think I hear sounds from upstairs…” said Rosalina.

There was a long moment of silence in the group. They listened for a few minutes, but didn’t hear anything.

“I don’t hear anything,” said Daisy.

“Okay, let’s get the heck outa here!” whispered Peach.

The group quickly made their way to the front doors, but when Luigi tried to get it opened, it was locked.

“Wait, I hear it again. Listen!” said Rosalina.

It was the sound of the girl crying, and it was coming from upstairs.
