The Jewel in the Crown Ch. 14

Chapter 14: Escaping the Forgotten Land

Once the group saw the angry mummies, they knew that they had no time to lose. At least ten or twenty mummies witnessed the group kill their evil king, and were after Jet, Wave, and everyone else to get revenge.

Jet and the others didn’t stop running for even a second. They made it to the castle and out back into the land of the dead without getting caught by the nets that the mummies were throwing at them. But that was the least of their worries, because some of the mummies were fast runners and were trying to tackle some of the team members to prevent them from escaping.

“When we get back, remind me not to watch World War Z for a least a month!” Knuckles cried.

“Agreed, because I feel like I’m being chased by those kind of zombies like you!” Sonic cried, as he dodged a mummy that tried to tackle him.

The group managed to shake them off, but they had to take a quick break so that they could catch their breath.

“Well, we got out of that castle, but how do we get back to Mobius?” said Tacey.

The group became silent. Getting back to Mobius wasn’t going to be easy, especially since they forgot where they came in.

“Katelyn, do you think you can use your ability to find a path out?” said Tacey.

“My dimensional scream? I… I don’t know. What can I touch to see if we can get an idea on where to go?” she asked.

The group couldn’t think of an answer, but Wave came up and said, “Try this. When Lawrence first kidnapped me, he made me take it. It’s not cursed, like the crown, so try touching it.”

Wave took out a regular looking stone of some sort, so Katelyn quickly tapped her finger on it. Sure enough, she started to feel dizzy as an image came to her mind. The group waited with silence for her to give them an answer. When she looked like she wasn’t feeling dizzy anymore, Katelyn looked around the area. She spotted a big tree in the distance, pointed to it, and said, “We have to take this stone to that tree. A portal should open up and take us home.”

“Sounds easy, if they don’t get in our way,” Luigi said, as he pointed to some mummies he spotted.

“Oh mama mia!” Mario muttered.

“I got this,” Sonic said.

He ran off towards the mummies and started to spin some of them by creating a blue tornado. While some of the mummies flew out of sight, the ones that remained either passed out, or started to throw up.

“Who knew dead guys could throw up…” said Knuckles, as he and the others watched the mummies throw up.

The mummies that remained where Sonic was spotted the blue hedgehog, but Sonic started to prepare a spin dash and started to attack them by launched a bunch of homing attacks. Sonic knocked out the last of the mummies, so the group was ready to run towards the tree.

Once they made it to the tree, Katelyn took the stone Wave gave her and placed it by the tree. A small light formed above the stone and a few seconds later, it turned into a portal back to the ruins that was back in Mobius.

The group jumped through the portal and watched it close behind them. However, once the portal was closed, the ground began to shake in the ruins, and a few rocks fell from the ceiling.

“The place is gonna collapse! Let’s go!” cried Jet.

The group ran as fast as they could for the exit. As they ran, parts of the ceiling started to crumble and fall, while the floor shook hard. At a couple points, someone tripped, but another was there to help them get back on their feet and continue running.

Luckily, the group made it out of the ruins before it was reduced to nothing but rubble.

“Phew! That was close!” said Sonic as he took a deep breath.

“We may have come out empty handed, but at least we escaped with our lives,” said Jet.

‘He’s not upset that we came out with no treasure? I wonder why that is…’ thought Wave. ‘Is it because, he’s just happy that I’m safe and not with Lawrence anymore?’

“Who says we came out with no loot?” said Katelyn.

Everyone glared at her with confused looks, so Katelyn pulled out her backpack and opened it up. A bunch of gold coins came out.

“Kate, you looted?!” cried Mario.

“Thought I’d take a bit while I was getting in my guard disguise back in the castle. I can sense that it’s not cursed. Don’t worry,” she explained.

“You still stole stuff. It’s not like you at all,” said Sonic.

“Who cares?! Treasure’s treasure! And the owner’s dead after all,” said Storm.

The group laughed for a bit before they made their way back to camp, packed up, and headed back home.
