“Metal Minions”(Volume 4, Story 8)

Another week came and passed for Mario, Sonic, and the others. Things felt normal for everyone, except for Mario and Sonic themselves. Things weren’t going to be so normal again pretty soon.

The month was coming to an end, which meant Katelyn was getting ready to return to her campus for her next semester of her freshman year of college. And the guys were really sad that she was going back so soon. They hadn’t been able to talk to her the past couple weeks because of something making her sad. She was finally starting to feel better, but she still felt a little down from the aftermath. But regardless of how she was still feeling at this point, she wasn’t going to let this hold her back from hanging out with her friends before returning to her campus. So she was coming over to hang out with the guys one last time before starting her next semester.

Sonic was sitting outside his house, relaxing on a lawn chair. He was wearing some sunglasses and was taking a nap. He invited Mario, Luigi, Silver, and Katelyn over for a game day on his new Wii U and to go out to lunch later. The blue hedgehog woke up early, and with some time to spare, he decided to take a nap while he waited outside for his friends.

Sonic’s parents were out for the day, while Sonia was on a date for lunch with Espio, and Manic was at the zoo on a date with Shade. So Sonic was by himself. The blue hedgehog didn’t mind being alone for a little bit, as long as he could nap in peace.

While Sonic was having his nap, Katelyn was on her way over to her friend’s house. She walked by herself with a sad look on her face. She had her headphones on and she was listening to a song by Linkin Park. She loved listening to their songs, whether she was down or not, because they were favorite band.

However, because she had headphones on, she didn’t notice that she was being followed by someone. It was Metal Sonic.

“Sonic. Sonic! Wake up,” said a voice.

“Huh?” Sonic groaned.

The blue hedgehog removed his shades to see that Silver was the one who woke him up.

“Oh hey Silver,” he said, before letting out a yawn.

“Hey. Sorry I woke you up,” said Silver.

“No no. It’s cool. I just woke up super early and wanted to take a quick nap before you all get her and we hang out,” said Sonic.

“Is Katelyn coming over?” asked Silver.

“Yeah. I’m happy she’s coming over today. With what’s been getting to her these past couple weeks, I was worried I wouldn’t see her again before she starts her next semester. She’s like a sister to me, and it worries me when stuff like this happens,” said Sonic.

“I understand. I get like that when I worry about Blaze,” said Silver.

“Speaking of our friends, I wonder what’s keeping Mario, Luigi, and Kate…” said Sonic.

“Sonic! Silver!” cried a voice.

The guys turned around to see Luigi running over to them.

“Luigi, what’s the matter?” asked Silver.

“Mario and I were on our way here, when we got ambushed by Metal Sonic! Metal Sonic didn’t go after me, but he kidnapped my brother!” said Luigi.

“What?! Metal Sonic kidnapped Mario?!” shouted Sonic.

“Where did he run off to?” asked Silver.

“Chances are, it’s Bowser and Eggman’s base,” said Sonic.

The three of them hurried to Bowser and Eggman’s base. Sonic ran with his speed, while Silver levitated himself and Luigi in the air.

“Ah, watch it Silver! You almost smacked me into a tree!” cried Luigi.

“Sorry!” Silver said quickly.

But before they could make it to the base, someone came out and attacked Sonic.

“Whoa!” cried Sonic.

“Sonic!” Luigi and Silver shouted at the same time.

The blue hedgehog tripped and hit the ground face first. When he stood up, he saw who attacked him.

“Katelyn?!” he cried.

Katelyn didn’t look like herself. Both of her legs were robotic, her right arm was also robotic, and her left eye was now a red LED light.

That’s when Mario came out from behind her, and he also looked like a cyborg! Unlike Katelyn, his left arm was now robotic, his chest was made of metal, and the right half of his face and his whole head was robotic.

“No… Did Eggman, robotocize them?!” cried Sonic.

“Katelyn?! Mario?!” cried Luigi.

“What’s going on here?!” cried Silver.

A third figure appeared. It was Metal Sonic.

“Metal! Did you do this to them?!” Sonic shouted angrily at him.

Metal Sonic didn’t speak. He pointed at Sonic, Luigi, and Silver.

“Terminate Sonic the Hedgehog and friends,” Mario said, in a robotic tone.

Katelyn aimed her robotic arm at the group. She tried to fire a fireball at them, but Sonic, Silver, and Luigi dodged just in time.

“Let’s get out of here!” cried Silver.

He started to run away, but when he turned around, he saw that Sonic and Luigi were staring at Katelyn and Mario.

“Guys, come on!” he shouted at them.

But Sonic and Luigi remained frozen. They didn’t even move at all. All they did was stare at Mario and Katelyn, who were now cyborgs and under Metal Sonic’s control.

“Urgh!” Silver growled.

He quickly used his powers to levitate them out of the way and flew all three of them away from Metal Sonic, and their controlled friends.

Once he got Luigi and Sonic away from Metal Sonic, Mario, and Katelyn, Silver brought his friends to Peach’s castle. He had to warn the princess about what happened to Mario and Katelyn, and find Tails and see if there was a way to restore their friends.

“Silver, you look like you’ve been running from death! And what’s the matter with Sonic and Luigi?” said Peach.

“Princess, Metal Sonic has captured Mario and Katelyn, and turned them into cyborgs! He’s done this to them to make sure that they only finish off Sonic!” Silver warned her.

“What? Mario has been robotocized!?” cried Peach.

“Princess…” Silver said sadly.

Peach started to sob.

Silver eyed her sadly and helped Sonic and Luigi sit down on a couch. The guys still looked horrified.

“Sonic, Luigi, what was the matter with you two back there?! I told you to run, and you two just stood there! When someone tries to kill you, you don’t just stand there and let them kill you! You flipping run!” Silver shouted at them.

Sonic snapped out of his frozen state, but Luigi started to tear up.

“In case you didn’t notice, Metal Sonic robotocized Luigi’s twin brother and one of my best friends!” he shouted at Silver. “And you weren’t shocked to see what became of our friends?!”

“I am shocked, Sonic! But that doesn’t mean I’m just gonna stand around and let them kill me, or even the two of you!” Silver shouted back.

“What is going on with this yelling?” a voice said.

Toadsworth and Knuckles walked into the room.

“Princess, why are you crying?” Toadsworth asked her with a worried look.

“Metal Sonic robotocized Mario and Katelyn…” Peach sobbed.

“What?! That metal jerkface robotocized my girlfriend?!” Knuckles shouted angrily.

“Yes…” Silver said sadly.

“I’m gonna kill Metal Sonic! He thinks he’s so great, with his blue spikes, his red shoes, that stupid look on his face, and his speed!” Knuckles growled.

“Uh…” Sonic said nervously.

Knuckles realized how he hurt Sonic with his words. He quickly calmed down and said, “Oh, but it’s cool with you, Sonic.”

“Why is everyone yelling out here?” asked another voice.

Tails came out from another room. He was wearing a lab coat, goggles, and latex gloves. “I’m in the middle of working on a machine that can turn salt water into fresh, drinking water in just seconds,” he said.

“Tails, Metal Sonic kidnapped Mario and Katelyn and robotocized them to look like cyborgs,” said Silver.

“What? Metal Sonic did what to who?!” cried Tails.

“He robotocized Mario and Katelyn and made it so that their only objective is to kill Sonic,” Silver repeated.

“Tails, remember when the Deadly Six kidnapped you and tried to robotcize you? I know you turned the tables by finding a way to keep your free will, but how did you change yourself back to normal? I don’t remember how we did that…” said Sonic.

“I built a machine that can de-robotcize someone, along with the help of your Uncle Chuck, since he found a way to restore himself, remember?” said Tails.

“Now I remember! We need to get Mario and Kate into that machine so we can restore them!” said Sonic.

“Where is the machine?” asked Luigi.

“My Uncle Chuck has it in a room in the castle at Mobotropolis. But we can’t transport it anywhere because it’s too large,” said Sonic.

“We’re gonna have to lure Mario and Katelyn to the machine then,” said Peach.

“But we’ll put Mobotropolis in danger,” said Tails.

“No. I’ll be the only one in danger. Metal brainwashed our friends to go after me and only me. I’m gonan have to lure them into the city and get them into the machine myself,” said Sonic.

“Sonic, at least let us help you. I want my brother back, but I don’t want him killing you in the process,” said Luigi.

“I don’t need anyone’s help. Just get that machine ready for when I lure them to the city,” said Sonic.

Before anyone could object to the idea of Sonic running off on his own, the blue hedgehog already left. Using his supersonic speed, he left the Mushroom Kingdom in just seconds.

“We can’t leave Sonic hanging by the thread and take them down on his own,” said Silver.

“I know, but our friends need us. We better do what Sonic says and just stick with the plan. If we change our minds at last minute, it might make things worse,” said Peach.

Sonic dashed out of the Mushroom Kingdom as fast as he could. He started to head for Mobotropolis, but the second he stepped foot out of the Mushroom Kingdom, something jumped out and tried to smack him in the back. Luckily, whatever it was missed him.

It was Mario.

“Mario!” Sonic cried.

Katelyn appeared from behind Mario.

“Kate! Guys, you have to snap out of it! You’re my best friends!” Sonic cried.

As a response to Sonic’s pleas, Katelyn aimed her robot arm at him. It shifted into a cannon.

“Ah!” cried Sonic.

The blue hedgehog quickly dodged a shot that Katelyn fired at him.

“Guys, this isn’t like you at all!” Sonic cried.

He started to slowly back up, but Metal Sonic jumped out from a bush that was a few feet away from him. Sonic eyed Metal angrily and shouted, “How could you do this to them?!”

Metal Sonic only jumped for Sonic. Sonic dodged the attack, which caused Metal to charge right into Mario. Katelyn started to chase after Sonic, but the blue hedgehog ran as fast as he could.

Sonic ran as fast as he could, but Katelyn remained close on his tail. The blue hedgehog tried to zip in between trees in the hopes of making her trip over something, but Katelyn simply destroyed whatever was in her path. And if Sonic wasn’t careful, he was going to be next.

Katelyn caught up to Sonic and grabbed him hard by the arm.

“AH! KATE NO!” Sonic shouted in panic.

He swung his fist as hard as he could and punched hard in the face. It must’ve hurt her, because she let her grasp on Sonic loose, allowing the hedgehog to escape.

While Metal and Mario chased after Sonic, Katelyn stood in place. She didn’t chase after Sonic for some reason.

Sonic didn’t dare look back as he got away. When he was sure that there wasn’t anything following him, he quickly found a place to hide. He needed to stop for a minute because he felt some pain in his arm from when Katelyn grabbed him.

The blue hedgehog took a look at his arm. It was badly bruised from where Katelyn grabbed him.

“Who knew that having an iron grip on someone will give them a bruise…?” Sonic groaned.

There was a hint of sadness in his voice. Sonic faced people who were robotized in the past, even his own father. It was a miracle that those people were restored after Eggman’s reign in Mobotropolis was finished off, but this time, this was different.

Sonic came to see Mario and Katelyn as a brother and a sister. They were both friends and family. Seeing them robotocized by Metal Sonic, a robot doppelganger of himself that Eggman created, was more horrifying.

“Mario… Kate… I will restore you guys…” Sonic said sadly.

Suddenly, he heard something sneak up from behind him. Sonic quickly turned around to see that Mario had caught up to him.

“AH!” he cried.

Mario swung his robot arm at Sonic, punching the hedgehog right in the eye. Sonic screamed in pain, and his cry must’ve motivated Mario to hurt him some more. The robotocized plumber punched Sonic in the chest.

Sonic coughed hard, but he didn’t give up on fighting back. When Mario tried to grab him, Sonic quickly swung his good arm and punched Mario on the half of his face that wasn’t robotocized.

Mario ended up jumping back. Sonic took this chance to run away, especially since Metal Sonic was back as well and after him.

But as Metal chased after Sonic, he didn’t notice that Mario wasn’t by his side.

This time, Sonic didn’t dare make any pit stops on his way to Mobotropolis. He fought the pain in his chest and continued to run. As he ran, he felt his eye swell up, which probably meant that he was going to get a black eye now.

He felt exhaustion starting to take over, but with Metal right behind him, Sonic refused to stop running. Now he wasn’t running just to get his friends to the machine to restore them. Now he was running for his own life.

Sonic made it to Mobotropolis, and just as he and the others expected, Metal Sonic only focused on fighting him. Seconds later, Mario and Katelyn showed up, and sure enough, their only target was Sonic as well.

“Hurry up guys!” Sonic groaned, as he dodged another punch from Mario.

In King Jules and Queen Aleena’s castle, the others were quickly starting up the machine.

“Is it ready?” Tails asked Sonic’s uncle.

“It’s ready now, sonny. Now we just need these friends of Sonic’s to come in,” said Uncle Chuck.

“I see them! Sonic’s bringing them here right now!” said Peach.

She was looking out the window and saw Sonic running up to the castle. Metal Sonic, Mario, and Katelyn were right on his tail. To Peach’s horror, she saw one of them attack Sonic. Sonic ended up tripping on the front steps to the castle, and the three of his chasers cornered him.

“Oh no! Sonic needs help!” cried Peach.

Silver and Knuckles quickly started to run outside to help Sonic out.

Outside, Sonic sat on the steps in pain. He had a black eye now, and now his chest was a bit bruised to. He started to pant in pain and exhaustion, as Metal, Mario, and Katelyn surrounded him.

“Mario… Kate… I… I failed you…” he managed to breathe out.

Mario and Katelyn slowly walked up to him. Metal Sonic started to make some weird noises, which must’ve meant that he was laughing.

“Terminate Sonic the Hedgehog. There can only be one,” said Metal Sonic.

But to both Metal and Sonic’s shock, Mario and Katelyn turned towards Metal Sonic. They aimed their robotic arms at the evil doppleganger and changed them into cannons!

“You’re not the boss of us,” Mario snapped at Metal Sonic.

Before Metal could say anything, Katelyn shot a blast out from her cannon. It smacked Metal right in the chest, sending him flying into a flower cart.

“That was for making us hurt Sonic!” she shouted angrily.

Sonic only stared in shock as his robotocized friends started to battle the robot who corrupted them. Even Silver and Knuckles, who finally showed up outside, were staring with surprised looks on their faces.

Mario and Katelyn either didn’t notice or didn’t care if the others were staring at them. They focused on fighting Metal Sonic instead.

“I am your master! Your maker!” Metal Sonic shouted angrily.

“You are no master to me!” Katelyn shouted angrily. She punched the robot doppelganger in the face, sending him flying into a fruit stand.

“You’re nothing but a poor copy of a true hero!” Mario shouted. He kicked Metal Sonic hard enough to send him crashing into a sunglass stand.

“Yo man! How many more of my shop stands are ya gonna break?!” the shop stand owner shouted angrily.

Mario and Katelyn didn’t care about the shop stand owner. They focused on fighting Metal Sonic.

Metal Sonic tried hard to fight back, but now that they were half robot, Mario and Katelyn were too fast for him to handle. The two of them finished off Metal Sonic within seconds, and to finish the job, Mario picked up Metal with his robot arm and tossed the doppelganger right out of Mobotropolis.

Silver and Knuckles watched with thesame reactions the whole time. Once it was over, they rushed over to Sonic, who was now lying unconscious on the steps leading up to the castle.

“Sonic!” cried Silver.

He quickly checked Sonic’s neck and felt a pulse.

“He’s got a pulse, and he’s breathing at least,” said Silver.

“You take him to the hospital. I’ll get Mario and Kate to the machine so that they can be restored,” said Knuckles.

Sometime later, Sonic woke up to find himself in a hospital room. As he sat up, he noticed that he had a bandage on his arm and that his black eye was starting to fade away now. On a table next to him were a couple cards from friends that said, “Get Well Soon”, and a plate of chili dogs Amy cooked for him.

Sonic felt his stomach growl, but he didn’t want to start eating the chili dogs. Instead, he looked around for any of his friends. Mario and Katelyn were walking in the room just as he started to look around. To Sonic’s surprise and relief, they were back to normal!

Sonic let out a sigh of relief.

“Sonic!” said Mario and Katelyn at the same time.

“Hey guys…” Sonic said quietly. He made a small smile on his face.

“We’re glad you’re awake now. You’ve been out for a few hours,” said Mario.

“I’m just happy you’re not robotocized anymore, but I’m confused. Why did you guys save me at the last second like that?” asked Sonic.

“After you punched us in the face, something inside of us must’ve snapped, because we got back our humanity and free will. We had to play along with Metal until he least expected it,” said Katelyn.

“Knuckles got us to the machine, but Metal came back in and destroyed it. We sent him flying back out, and luckily, since Kate had her free will back, she used her powers to restore us,” said Mario.

“Kinda like how you did the same with my dad…” Sonic said with a chuckle.

Mario and Katelyn only gave Sonic a hug.

“We’re just glad that you’re okay Sonic. We’re sorry for hurting you,” said Katelyn sadly.

Sonic shook his head and said, “That wasn’t your doing. It was Metal Sonic’s dirty work.”

“The doctor said you should be ready to go in a little bit, so after you’re ready to leave, we’ll go eat out. The three of us,” said Katelyn.

Sonic made a sad smile and said, “I’m just glad I’ll get to hang out with you guys like we planned. Especially you Kate. I’m gonna miss you when you go back to college.”

“Yeah. And I’m sorry if I kept your distance from you guys. It’s just that with something going on that left me depressed, I needed time apart from friends, since it was an issue between me and a friend that left me feeling that way,” said Katelyn.

“You just needed a break. We understand. And you told me it’s slowly getting better. You and your friend had a talk like adults and it’s slowly improving now,” said Mario.

“Yeah. When we go eat, you tell us where to go Sonic. Your choice,” said Katelyn.

Sonic only smiled and hugged his friends. He didn’t care about that right now. He was just glad to have his friends back.
