Knuckles x Katelyn- Our Moments

Knuckles’s POV

I know some of you guys may find it weird, that I, Knuckles the Echidna, have fallen for a girl in my life. And not just any girl, but a girl who’s also a human. You guys should know her, but if you don’t her name is Katelyn. Katelyn Staples (not catlynn. She doesn’t like it when people pronounce it like that…), and she’s a really nice girl. I know she’s not an echidna like me, but I don’t care about it. I do like her a lot, and she likes me back.

But how have I fallen for her? Well, I guess I can sum it up with our moments back in the events of the saga the two of us and our friends first starred in: The Tale of the Three Heroes.

I first met her when I was getting ready to go to Dreamland. If you don’t know that world (not the place from the Kirby Games, from which I’ve heard about…), it’s a world where magic exists, and dreams became a reality if they’re good. My friends and I were invited to go, so on one day, I headed to some places to get my necessary things to buy before I would go to Dreamland.

But as I was walking, a large group of girls began to surround me. And please understand when I say that they made me really nervous, because they did. I’m really not comfortable around some girls, especially Rouge (well, before I met Katelyn). Those girls bothered me and teased. I didn’t have the guts to defend myself, but I did try to run away.

But someone came to my rescue, and what do you know? It was Katelyn! She beat their butts up because she saw them teasing me and trying to harass me. They fled in panic, but probably because they never thought that a girl in glasses like Katelyn could beat them up. I was a bit nervous after they left and it was just Katelyn left, but I felt better. I felt somewhere deep inside me, that I could trust her, especially after she held out her hand to help me get back on my feet (those girls actually pushed me back and I fell on the ground).

“Why’d you help me?” I asked er.

 “Well, I can’t help myself sometimes. Besides, why didn’t you fight back? I know guys can’t hit girls, but it should be okay when it comes to self-defense,” she said.

 “I don’t know why, but I’m just nervous around girls,” I admitted with a blushing look.

 “Does that mean that you’re nervous right now, since a girl saved you from girls?”

 I laughed and then said, “You’re funny, but no. I’m not nervous. Thank you for helping me out.”

 “Why were they attacking you?”  she asked.

 “I got lost when I was trying to find the shop where they sell the wands. All this stuff is for that weird place called Camelot Castle.”

 “I actually just came from that shop. I was looking for my friends because I lost track of them. You want me to take you to the shop you’re looking for?”

 “Sure. Least I can do to say thank you.”

After that day, I couldn’t seem to stop thinking about her. I only met Katelyn once after that day, but things felt different when I thought about her. I didn’t seem to care if she was different, especially when I was lied to about her.

Bowser and Eggman tried to trick me into doing their bidding, and like the times in the past, they tried to trick me with a lie.

They sent Bowser Jr. to come and lie to me. Our scenario went like this:

“What do you want?” I growled to him when I saw him on Angel Island that evening.

 To my surprise, Bowser Jr. started to cry about something and break down into tears.

 “Oh please! You must help me! My papa needs help! He’s in trouble!” He sobbed.

All I did was stood there in amusement. Somewhere in my gut, I could sense that Jr. was probably lying to me because of all the times I’ve been tricked in the past.

“Please help my papa! He’s being pushed around by a horrible man! The guy is strange! He never shows his face or speaks with his real voice, so we can’t figure out who he is! He wants my papa to hand over this human girl! If he fails to do so, then my papa will lose me and he can’t bear to lose me! Please help us! You’re a great treasure hunter, so you can easily help us!” Bowser Jr. explained through some sobbing tears.

Despite his complement on my treasure hunting skills, I still wasn’t sure if he was telling the truth, and like I said, it’s all because of the past. I never learned my lesson because let’s face it, I’m just gullible.

However, I could hear Katelyn’s voice speaking to me, telling me to hold back and not fall for it.

‘Don’t let it get to you. He could be lying to you, Knuckles. He might be trying to trick you. Think it over carefully,’ her voice said to me in my head.

“Who is it that you need help looking for?” I asked Bowser Jr. I wanted to make sure if this was a trick

“Some ratty human girl who could destroy everything this man wants to do to improve the Universe. Her name is Katelyn Staples!” cried Bowser Jr.

At that point, I knew he was lying. Despite only meeting Katelyn once, I knew she wasn’t like that, and I felt the goodness about her from that day we first me. I wasn’t going to let a lie fool me this time!

“Well then… if you’re having so much trouble… you can do it all on your own…” I told him.

After I said that, my theory about him lying was confirmed. Bowser Jr. looked furious with me and my answer.

“WHAT?! YOU WON’T WORK WITH US?!” he screamed at me.

All I did was tell him, “It’s your problem, not mine. You fatheads can work it out on your own.”

After that, he tried to fight me, but I stopped him. When he left, I made my way to the Mushroom Kingdom, but I wasn’t able to get there on time. Katelyn was captured by Bowser and Eggman, and their battleship faced an error in the system and crashed in a malfunction, and she was trapped on it.

But I didn’t stop there strangely. I found a Chaos Emerald, so I used it to go back in time. I snuck on the battleship before it left for the Mushroom Kingdom, waited for it to pick her up, and when the malfunction took place, I ran to find her.

We found each other, and we were able to escape on it. Strangely, she wasn’t scared like how a normal person would be as a damsel in distress. She wasn’t scared of Bowser and Eggman, and she even seemed to attack them with words. We fought them and their minions and were able to escape the battleship together.

Time passed a little bit after that day, and as it did, I found out that I was starting to fall in love with her. I finally realized this when we were in Dreamland.

The day I realized this was when we went to the Falls of Desire. Well, actually, she found it, not me…

 We found the cave tunnel that led to the falls, and yet, we didn’t know about the Falls of Desire. She had a vision of the tunnel and I believed her about it, so we went through the tunnel and reached the ending. I accidently triggered the trap of the tunnel, and while I was whisked away by a big wave of water, she was taken to the falls.

But getting out of the Falls of Desire wasn’t easy for her. She sunk deep into the lake by Camelot Castle, because the falls were in an underwater dome at the bottom of the lake. When Katelyn was done seeing the falls, she tried to swim back up. I was waiting at the lake’s surface, constantly diving back down to find her, and I finally found her during one dive. She was passing out, probably because she wasn’t fast enough to try to make it back.

I dove after her. There was only one thing on my mind when I saw her unconscious and sinking down to the lake, and that was to save her. I grabbed her by her arm and pulled her up to where our friends were. I had to make sure she didn’t die and to my happiness and relief, I saved her.

As I was pulling her out, I knew that somewhere inside me, I couldn’t imagine what my life would be like without someone like her. She was a good friend to me, and she was by my side when I needed someone. So that’s how I found out: I was falling for her.

After that day I saved her, I did my best to ask her out, and I finally did. Our friends called it a date, but both of us denied it being so. All we did was hang out at a festival for our first date, but even so, it went great. I can’t stop thinking about the food we ate, the Pokémon battle we had, and the time we spent together all in all. It was a great first date, and after it ended, I felt my feeling for her growing stronger.

These feelings got me over my anxiety whenever I was around girls. Katelyn wasn’t like other girls, and because of that, I wasn’t nervous around her. I continued to fall for her, and eventually asked her out to the winter dance that Camelot Castle was hosting.

The dance didn’t go well at all sadly, but it’s because of the Dark King. We had our first kiss that evening, but Katelyn felt some pain in her head. It’s because she could sense that the Dark King was after her and knew that she was falling for someone else. I couldn’t’ understand what was happening, but only one thing was on my mind after Mario and Sonic told me that the Dark King was coming, and that was to protect Katelyn and keep her away from him.

That evening was rough, and although it had its ups and downs, I was able to keep her out of the Dark King’s grasp.

Unfortunately, the Dark King put a spell on the rest of our friends, so while Mario and Sonic went with them to protect them, I spent some time on the run with Katelyn, the Babylon Rouges, and a few other allies of ours who didn’t forget everything.

As I spent time on the run with Kate and the others, I was worried about her. I kept having nightmares about her not just getting captured by the Dark King, but also getting killed by him. I worried so much, that she noticed it. She told me not to worry, and she even stayed close to me most of the time so that she knew I had no need to worry about her. As long as she was with me, I knew she was safe.

Things lasted like this for just a little while, and then came the time when we went to Paradise Island to save our friends and stop the Dark King. Sadly, Katelyn was killed by the Dark King, when she, Mario, and Sonic were finishing their job burning down the island. Mario and Sonic didn’t let the Dark King take her after he killed her, because he wanted to revive her and turn her to the Dark Queen. Mario and Sonic brought her to us instead, and I felt broken when I saw that she was dead. However, I felt her presence, and because of that, I was able to bring her back to life with the power of Mara’s Moonstone, which had the Elixir of Love.

After I revived her, time unfroze, and we ended up finding each other separated. I found my friends and made it to her house. Katelyn was alone, and she thought that all our adventures were just a dream. She was depressed, and was even going to take her own life away when I saw her with a knife.

My only thought was to stop her, so I ran inside and kicked the knife away from her. I hugged her tightly, so she’d know that I was for real and not another dream. She stopped herself and we left to go and stop the Dark King once and for all.

That final battle was hard, but after all our hard work, the Dark King was dead. We were finally able to start dating, and we didn’t have to worry about someone who was jealous threatening the lives of our friends in order to keep us apart. (Literally, the Dark King was threatening to kill everyone we loved since he saw that we were together).

Now that the Dark King’s gone, I have never felt happier. I’m with Katelyn now, and our relationship is respected by others, even by Katelyn’s dad.

After I looked back at our moments, I decided to invite Katelyn over to help me guard the Master Emerald. She always looks forward to these times we get together, and so do I.

“Hey Kate,” I said, as we sat in front of the emerald and guarded it.

“Yes Knux?” she asked. (I love it when she calls me that. I guess she gave me that nickname since I call her Kate a majority of the time).

“I… I love you…” I managed to cough up.

She smiled, kissed me on the check and said, “I love you to,” before she moved her lips to mine.

I blushed in a deep shade of red on my face, but I kissed her back.
