Chapter 4: A Better House

Cream crawled through the tunnel from inside the black door. Surely this must be a dream. Earlier, there was nothing but a brick wall when she and her family opened up the black door. Surely this must be a dream.

And this dream was quite an adventure already.

When she made it to the end of the tunnel, Cream found herself back in her living room.

“Huh? Am I back where I started?” she asked herself.

She took a look around the room. Everything was exactly the same. Everything except the portrait that was above the fireplace. The one back home had the three white figures that looked sad. In this one, there were no sad, white figures. Instead, it looked like three happy children. Two of them were Mobians, and the third was a different species.

Cream was about to start guessing what species the figures in the portrait were, but the smell of something cooking caught her attention. It smelled hot and fresh, like how her mother cooked often before they moved.

“Mmm. Something smells good,” she told herself. Her stomach growled as she talked to herself.

Following the scent of the food, she walked down the house and to the kitchen. As she walked towards the kitchen, Cream noticed that this house was indeed more different than the Pink Palace Apartment. The walls were freshly painted. The furniture was new. And there was light coming from the kitchen.

When she got into the kitchen, she expected to see her mother, Vector, Charmy, and Espio inside. However, none of them were there. Instead, she saw what appeared to be a hedgehog. He was black with light grey strips on his quills, and the gloves and shoes he wore were also the color grey.

Cream was afraid to call out to the hedgehog, but he turned around before she could say hello. And when he did, Cream noticed two strange features about him: his eyes were green like snake eyes, and he had no mouth on his grey muzzle.

“Why hello there. I was hoping you’d come in, Cream,” he said kindly.

“Wh-wh-who are you? An- and how do you know my name?” Cream asked fearfully.

The hedgehog let out a friendly chuckle.

“No need to be afraid, sweet little girl. My name is Mephiles, and I just wanted to welcome you home,” he said.

    “H-home?” asked Cream.

“Why yes. I live here in the Pink Palace to. Just in a parallel version of that crummy old house. Here, everything’s better, and more fun,” said Mephiles.

Cream was quiet. She was a little confused and scared.

“I knew it. You’re sadden by your move and upset by this sudden change. But don’t worry, my dear. I’m here to make your home much better than it should be. So I cooked up a welcome home feast for you, and your family,” said Mephiles.

    “My family to?” asked Cream.

“Why yes. You see, since this is a parallel version of the Pink Palace, I have created other versions of your family, and improved versions to be exact,” said Mephiles.

    “Improved?” asked Cream.

“Yes. Cream, could you please go to the study and tell them that dinner is finished?” asked Mephiles kindly.

    “Okay…” said Cream.

She slowly left the kitchen and kept her eyes on Mephiles. The grey hedgehog got back to cooking and started humming a song.

This is such a strange, but interesting dream…’ thought Cream.

She walked down the hallway and found the study. When she got inside, she was shocked to see these “improved” versions of everyone that Mephiles told her about.

They all looked pretty much the same as they did in the real world, but what really made them different from Cream’s real family were their eyes, which were buttons.

Buttons for eyes? But why doesn’t Mephiles have that? Could it be because there’s no regular version of him back home?’ thought Cream.

“Oh Cream, you’ve come,” said the other Vanilla.

    “Uh… Hi… mom…” said Cream nervously.

“Oh, you don’t have to call me that if it’s uneasy for you. Just call me Vanilla EXE,” said the other Vanilla.

“And call me Vector EXE, if you’d like Cream,” said the other Vector.

“And I’m Espio EXE and this is Charmy EXE,” said the other Espio.

“Hello…” Cream said. She made a nervous smile while she spoke.

“Is there something, Cream?” asked Charmy EXE. Unlike the Charmy back home, he sounded… calm.

“Oh, Mister Mephiles said that he’s made dinner,” said Cream.

“He has? What a kind jester of him,” said Vector EXE, smiling.

Cream walked with the group back over to the kitchen. She gasped and stared with big eyes when she saw that Mephiles prepared a feast for her and the others. There was chicken, mashed potatoes, corn on a cob, salad, and more. All waiting at the table.

While the others sat down, Cream only stared at the food. Though she was still hungry from not eating earlier, she was so surprised that she couldn’t move.

“Would you like anything to drink, Miss Cream?” Mephiles asked her.

He walked over to her and had a tray with a cup and a few bottles of soda.

“Oh, Pepsi please,” Cream politely asked.

“Certainly,” Mephiles said. He poured her some soda in the cup, handed it to her, and walked her like a gentleman to her seat.

“Thank you, Mister Mephiles,” Cream said politely.

“You’re welcome. And you don’t have to call me Mister. Just Mephiles is fine,” said Mephiles.

As dinner passed by, Cream started to understand what Mephiles meant by how the EXEs were “improved”. Charmy EXE was calm and didn’t have too much energy, Espio EXE was interested in talking with her, Vector EXE was professional and had a more successful role than as a detective, and Vanilla EXE was more enthusiastic while she talked.

Cream found it strange, but amazing how the EXEs were all exactly how she wished her family would be, but she was still curious about why Mephiles invited her here.

“Having a lovely time here, Cream?” Mephiles asked her.

“I am Mephiles. Thank you,” said Cream with a smile.

Mephiles nodded his head back (probably since he couldn’t smile with no mouth), but he started to look down at his plate.

“Mephiles, is there something wrong?” asked Cream.

“Oh nothing. It’s just that, I’m glad you’ve come to visit me, Cream. I get so lonely here. Sure, I have my wonderful friends the EXEs, but it’s nice to have a real visitor to,” said Mephiles sadly.

“Oh don’t be sad Mephiles. I’ll always come and visit you when I can,” said Cream.

    “You mean it?” asked Mephiles.

    “Of course,” Cream said, smiling.

Mephiles grinned (somehow without a mouth) and got up from his seat. He walked over to a counter and brought a cake over to the table. He set it down a few feet away from Cream, and the young rabbit could see that it said “Welcome Home, Cream” in pink frosting.

“This is a pretty cake. Thank you Mephiles,” she said kindly.

    “You’re welcome,” said Mephiles.

For the rest of her time in Mephiles’s house, Cream played games with the EXEs and Mephiles. She played hide n seek, board games, and drew artwork with them. When she finished a drawing of her with Mephiles she handed it to the grey hedgehog.

“Oh no my dear, you can keep it,” he said kindly.

Cream smiled, but then she let out a yawn.

“Are you tired Cream?” Mephiles asked her.

Cream nodded her head as she started to feel drowsy.

Mephiles chuckled and helped her onto his shoulders He gave her a piggyback ride upstairs to what looked like Cream’s bedroom back at her house, but was more colorful. Cream opened her eyes to get a look at this version of her room, and she gasped in amazement to see how it looked. She loved how bright and colorful it was, and she saw that her toys were alive as they greeted her.

Cream yawned again, so Mephiles gently set her down in the bed. He pulled the sheets over the young rabbit and gave her a kiss on the forehead.

“Sweet dreams, Cream. And I’ll see you soon,” he whispered to her.

Cream closed her eyes and went back to sleep.

A ray of sunlight hit Cream on her eyes, and she woke up. She sat up, let out a yawn, and rubbed her eyes before taking a look around the room. She was back in her old bedroom, where the boxes were still piled up, and the walls looked lifeless.

“Oh. It was just a dream. But it was amazing,” she said to her doll.

She started to get up from bed, but then she heard a paper fall and hit the floor. Cream looked down and saw what it was that she dropped while she was getting out of bed. It was the drawing of her and Mephiles, holding hands and playing together.

Cream gasped when she saw the drawing. She made that in her dream.

Was it really a dream, or… did it all actually happen?

Chapter 4 of my Sonic- Coraline parody story "Behind the Black Door"

Summary: Cream goes through the tunnel and meets Mephiles, who shows that his parallel version of the house is better and more fun. But was it all really a dream?

NOTE: For the copies of the other characters Mephiles creates, I made the copies the EXE versions of the origianl characters. I am NOT a fan of creepypasta, but I figured the best bet of having copies of everyone (besides robots) was the EXEs. Please don't judge me.

Eh, one question. What's EXE an acronym for?
