Chapter 5: The Chase

Back at the park, Sonia was sitting on a bench as she watched Charmy swing on the swings by himself. It was quiet and there wasn’t anyone else there, so Sonia started to think as she watched over Charmy.

She was thinking about her brothers. Who kidnapped them? Were they okay? And if they weren’t, were they still alive?

Sonia stopped thinking when she spotted two pairs of eyes peering from a thick bush, from the other side of the playground. She didn’t recognize those pairs of eyes, but she was feeling uncomfortable. It was probably Sleet and Dingo…

“Charmy!” she called to the bee on the swings.

Charmy got off the swing and flew over to her.

    “Yeah Sonia?” he asked.

“Uh, let’s go for a walk,” she said. She wanted to walk away from the park and to somewhere where there were plenty of people around them. If Sleet and Dingo were hiding in that bush, then she wanted to take Charmy somewhere with people around them so that those crooks would have witnesses for trying to attack.

Charmy grabbed Sonia’s hand and the two started to walk out of the park quickly. After a few minutes walking, Sonia took a glance to see if the pairs of eyes were somewhere else. She didn’t see them, but she kept on walking and began to pick up the pace.

The two of them walked a bit more, until Charmy turned around to see if they were being followed.

“Sonia… two scary guys are following us…” he whispered nervously.

‘Crap! Sleet and Dingo!’ thought Sonia.

She stopped walking and with her free hand, she touched her medallion. She listened and heard the sounds of footsteps coming up.

With perfect timing, she turned her medallion into her keyboard laser gun. Sonia turned around and fired.

The shot missed Sleet and Dingo, but the two hit the ground hard when they dodged it.

    “Let’s go Charmy!” Sonia shouted.

She picked up Charmy and started to run away. Sonia had fought with Sleet and Dingo before, and she had her superhuman strength and gun with her, but now wasn’t the time to fight them. Charmy was with her, and she couldn’t risk putting him in danger by fighting Sleet and Dingo.

Sonia ran for a bit until she found a place with some people. Sleet and Dingo would still come after her, because they were the kind of crooks who won’t stop no matter what. She had to keep running, but she looked around for a place to hide Charmy. Sonia spotted a play area for little kids with some Chao, so she ran over there and put Charmy with kids.

“Stay here, until either me, or Espio and Vector come back!” she told him.

Charmy gave her a salute and watched as Sonia ran off.

Sonia ran out of the area and a bit into the city. Sleet and Dingo were now chasing her with a motorcycle (or just Sleet, since he turned Dingo into the motorcycle with his stupid remote).

“Oh I wish I had my motorcycle!” Sonia said to herself as she continued to run away.

They were quickly catching up to her, so Sonia had to find a way to get out of their reach. She spotted a fire escape balcony on a nearby building, so she ran over to it and with her agility and gymnastic skills, Sonia made a big leap. She managed to grab onto the grate and pulled herself out.

She watched as Sleet stopped his Dingo-motorcycle and got up. Sleet pulled out his remote and pressed a button. A laser shot out and changed Dingo into some weird gun.

“Oh shim! Not a grapple gun!” Sonia whispered to herself.

She didn’t know which was going to happen next: either Sleet was gonna fire at the ladder to pull it down so he can climb after her, or grab Sonia with the hook. Either way, she was screwed.

But before Sleet could fire, a flash of purple came out and attacked him and Dingo. Espio arrived, but there wasn’t any sign of Vector or Charmy with him. Espio attacked Sleet and Dingo with his self-defense skills, kicking and punching them until they gave up and fled.

“Sonia! Where are you?” he called out, once Sleet and Dingo were gone.

“I’m up here!” she called to him.

Espio looked up and saw her.

“Just jump! I’ll catch you!” he told her.

Sonia carefully climbed down until she couldn’t go anymore. Closing her eyes tight, she jumped down and waited to see if she’d either end up on the ground  or in Espio’s arms.

To her relief, Espio caught her. She opened her eyes and blushed as she glared into his yellow eyes. Espio was also blushing as he glared into her purple eyes.

    “Espio? Sonia?” said a voice.

The two of them turned around to see that Vector and Charmy caught up. Sonia quickly got up and she and Espio blushed.

Vector grinned but Charmy said, “Did those scary guys go away?”

“Yes. I sent them running away,” said Espio.

“Did you find anything?” Sonia asked him.

“We confronted our old rival Nack, but he only aided in the capture of your brothers by throwing that grenade. He wasn’t with the kidnappers, but Sleet and Dingo might be,” Espio explained.

“So they faked running away after my brothers disappeared,” Sonia said.

“But if it wasn’t Nack, and Sleet and Dingo are just helping the kidnapper, then who’s the bad guy?” Charmy said.

As the group talked, Vector didn’t pay attention. He was lost in his thoughts, thinking about what he just saw between Espio and Sonia.

‘Epsio likes Sonia…’ he thought as a warm smile came on his face.

But he quickly forgot about that, because he noticed a wallet on the ground. He picked it up and opened it to see the ID. The ID had Dingo’s face on it, which meant that the dope dropped it when Espio attacked him.

Vector started to look through the wallet for any clues. At first, all he saw was the usual stuff: money, gift cards, and the ID, but he found a piece of paper that was interesting. The croc opened it up and read it. It was a to do list.

“Man, who would’ve thought that only stupid villains make a to do list of their evil tasks…” Vector muttered to himself.

“Vector, what are you talking about?” Charmy asked. He, Espio, and Sonia stopped talking and turned their attention to the croc.

Vector showed them what he found. They read the to do list to see what Sleet and Dingo were up to:

    To do list

    1)      Attack the hedgehogs to help the client kidnap Sonic and Manic

    2)      Follow Sonia, and try to kidnap her

    3)      Meet the client at the dock warehouses

“Well, looks like we’re going to the docks now…” said Vector.

“And we’ve got to thank Dingo’s stupidity to help us…” Sonia muttered.

As the team started to head out to the dock warehouses, the same pairs of eyes that were watching Sonia at the park were watching them leave.

But it turns out, it wasn’t Sleet and Dingo, and they weren’t watching Sonia back at the park. They were watching Charmy instead. They were going to come out and talk to Charmy, but they noticed that they startled Sonia, and figured to wait. They witnessed the chase, and were coming to help, until Espio beat them to help Sonia.

“Should we go and talk to them now?” the first one asked. He was younger than his friend, but maybe a little bit older than Tails’s age.

“Not now. If we come out, then Snow will be suspicious and think we’re helping them instead of him. We are helping them instead of him, but now’s not the time to come out buddy. Let’s just keep following them until the right time,” said the second one. He was around the same age as Espio, but even though he was stronger than Espio, he was just as wise as his chameleon friend.
