“A Big Boom Adventure” Sonic Boom special  (Volume 1, Story 20)

On a warm, autumn afternoon, the Three Heroes decided to go and check out a nearby jungle of some sort. Along with them were Tails, Amy, Knuckles, Luigi, Yoshi, and Peach. The crew decided to see if there were any nearby Chaos Emeralds in the jungle, or if they could find anything that was tied to Bowser and Eggman’s whereabouts.

Some of the crew members were in a different outfit so that they were prepared to go through the jungle.

Sonic wore some sports tape around his wrists and ankles, a brown bandana around his neck, a wrist watch to communicate with Tails on his right wrist, and different red shoes. Tails wore goggles on his forehead, a brown belt with a gadget button, different white gloves, and sports tape around his shoes. Amy wore a different dress, had purple leggings and sleeves to go with her different gloves and shoes, and her Piko Piko hammer was different now to match her new outfit. Knuckles had some sports tape on his arms and ankles, along with some different gloves and shoes. Katelyn had her hair longer and tied back in a ponytail, and instead of her usual t-shirt and jeans, she wore a skirt with purple shorts to go with it, boots instead of her usual sneakers, had sports tape on her left hand hand, a different glove on her right hand, and her red purse was replaced by a backpack.

Peach wore her pink outfit for when she did athletic stuff, but Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi didn’t wear a new outfit, but they did bring some backpacks with them.

“Think that an emerald could be out here?” Sonic asked Tails.

“Hope so. My scanner seems to be detecting something out here, but it won’t let me know if it’s got chaotic energy,” Tails replied.

“Never seen a jungle like this,” said Mario. “It’s certainly different from the one that Donkey Kong lives in.”

Katelyn was checking out one of the flower plants nearby and taking a photography shot.

“This is a not a vacation Katelyn! We’re out here to see if there’s something to find!” said Amy.

“Hey, please don’t talk to Kate like that!” Knuckles told her.

Katelyn blushed when she heard Knuckles defend her. He’s been like this ever since the time they found out that the Dark King was after them. Even after the Dark King’s death, Knuckles would still be looking after her and making sure that nothing would hurt her.

Then again, Katelyn wasn’t completely helpless. She knew how to fight, so sometimes, it got a little annoying for her.

“Now, now, calm down the both of you,” she said.

The sound of something moving through the trees startled the group. Katelyn pulled out her sword while the others pulled out some of their gear. A robot of some sort came out. It had claws with it, snapping its metal pinchers at the group.

“I bet a dollar that this thing was made by Eggman,” said Sonic, as he dodged an attack.

The robot continued to snap its pinchers at them, but it didn’t seem to be fast enough to grab someone.

“You’re too slow butt bot!” Katelyn teased the robot.

However, the robot seemed to be offended by her insult to tease it, because the next thing they knew, Katelyn and Amy were attacked by the robot. It stretched out one of its arms and knocked them back. Amy and Katelyn fell down off a ditch and disappeared in the trees.

“Amy! Kate!” cried Peach.

She started to run after them, but the robot hit her from behind. Luckily, Peach grabbed onto a tree branch before she could fall down to. She climbed back up to see that Knuckles, Tails, Luigi, and Yoshi were having trouble fighting the robot trying to get Mario and Sonic free.

Down below the thick trees, Katelyn and Amy were getting back on their feet. After they fell, they smacked into some leaves from the trees and almost got hurt.

“Kate, are you alright?” Amy asked her, rubbing her head as she stood up.

“I feel like I finished carrying a fully loaded minivan…” Katelyn groaned as she stood back up. “But I feel fine.”

“Where are we?” asked Amy.

Katelyn didn’t answer her. She heard something rustling through the trees nearby. Was it Sonic and the others, or was it that robot from before?

It was neither, but a Mobian came out. For a moment, Katelyn thought she looked like Marine, but as she came closer, it wasn’t Marine. The Mobian looked like an orange and brown jungle badger, and she looked startled when she saw Amy and Katelyn.

“Uh… hi…?” Katelyn said nervously.

“Who are you? Are you with the government agents that are replacing my plants with violins?” said the badger.

“What?” asked Amy.

The sound of a ring tone for a cell phone went off. The badger yelped in panic and said, “What is that sound?! Is it one of their bombs ready to go off?!”

Katelyn calmly but slowly pulled out her cell phone.

“It’s just my cell phone. You use it to call someone, not blow them to bits…” Katelyn said. She tried to tap the screen, because it was Knuckles calling her, but no signal came up. “Dang it! No bars! Guess we’ll have to find our friends on foot…” she said.

“Friends?” asked the badger.

“Yeah. We came out here to just explore, not do… whatever the… people you mentioned are up to…” said Amy.

“Do you know your way around here?” Katelyn asked the badger.

“Of course I do! I’ve lived out here my whole life! My burrow isn’t far from here,” said the badger.

“Well, do you think you can help us find our friends? We got separated because of some big stupid robot…” said Katelyn.

When she mentioned the robot, the badger seemed to turn her focus towards that subject.

“That big shiny thing that is starting the roboapocolypse is around here?!” she cried.

“Roboapocolypse? I’m sorry, but you’re not making any sense…” said Amy.

“Uh… maybe we should introduce one another to make things easier. My name’s Katelyn, and this is my friend Amy,” said Katelyn, as she introduced herself and Amy.

“And my name is Sticks!” said the badger, suddenly changing to a cheerful attitude. She extended her hand to shake hands. Amy nervously shook Sticks’s hand, but Katelyn kindly shook it.

“So Sticks was it? Well, we just need to get through this jungle. Can you please help us out?” said Katelyn.

“Of course! You may doubt me, but I’ll help you anyway, because I’m a good friend!” said Sticks.

Sticks started to dash ahead of them, but Amy and Katelyn only shrugged and followed their new friend so they can find the others.

Back with Mario, Sonic, and the others, the group was searching for Amy and Katelyn. After finally managing to shake off the robot, they started to head in the direction where Amy and Katelyn were separated from them. They found the place where the girls landed, but no sign of them.

“Where could they have gone?” asked Tails.

“Maybe they headed off to go in there,” said Knuckles.

He was pointing at a tunnel of some sort.

“Yeah… I don’t think they’d go in there…” said Sonic.

“Oh come on! We won’t know until we check it out!” said Knuckles.

But as the echidna walked inside, some sort of trigger must have been set, because the next thing he knew, Knuckles got caved in by some boulders that blocked the entrance.

“Knuckles!” cried Sonic from the outside.

“I’m fine! I didn’t get crushed. I’ll just dig my way out!” the echidna called from the inside.

However, before he could start digging, he heard some noises coming from behind. He turned around to see some robots coming for him.

“Oh great…” he said with a sigh.

He cracked his knuckles before he got into a fist fight with his ambushers.

Back outside the cave, Sonic, Mario, and the others had trouble of their own. The robot from before arrived and started to attack them again.

“Doesn’t this guy ever give up?!” Sonic shouted.

“Wait… that’s it!” Mario whispered to himself.

He ran over to the rocks and shouted at the robot, “He butt-brain! I’m over here you big dope!”

The robot’s eyes flashed red in anger, and it extended one of its long arms at Mario. The plumber dodged just in time. The robot ended up breaking the rocks, which destroyed the barricade that caved Knuckles inside the tunnel. When the dust cleared, the group found Knuckles finishing up a few robots that ambushed him with his strength.

“Knuckles!” said Yoshi.

Suddenly, the robot grabbed him and Tails. Yoshi and Tails cried out in panic.

“Hey!” shouted Knuckles.

He picked up a few of the broken robots he destroyed while trapped in the cave and chucked them at the claw robot. A few bonked off the robots head, but at least it made the robot flinch and drop Tails and Yoshi.

“Let’s go while the going’s good!” said Luigi.

The group bolted away from the robot, but it seemed to be following them.

“Urgh! He won’t let it go!” said Peach.

“I’ll shake him off your trail! Find Amy and Kate and call me if you find them!” said Sonic.

Sonic ran down another path and turned to face the robot. “You butt face! Let’s see if you can keep up with the cool guy!” he shouted at the robot.

The robot turned its attention to Sonic and began to chase after the blue hedgehog.

“We better find Amy and Kate fast so we can help Sonic out!” said Yoshi.

Back with Amy and Katelyn, the girls were following Sticks through the jungle. She led them to her burrow and treated them to a snack. Sticks pulled out some fresh fruit and got them some water. Amy and Katelyn, despite how they figured the others were worried about them, figured that maybe a few minutes having a snack to regain some strength wouldn’t hurt their time. And besides, the time that they spent with Sticks was nice, despite her sort of odd nature. The girls were quickly seeing Sticks as a close friend.

“She kinda reminds me of when I was her age. I was strange to, but that’s because I didn’t get my asperger’s at the time. Also, I spent lots of time alone like her,” Katelyn whispered to Amy.

“Guess we’re all kinda like that as younger kids. I mean, I didn’t know how to act calm in front of Sonic until I met you Kate,” said Amy.

“What are you all talking about?” Sticks asked them, as she came over with the fruit.

“Nothing important,” said Amy.

“So Sticks, what was it about those… people you mentioned when we first ran into you?” Katelyn asked her.

“Oh, some strange people came here a few weeks ago. They’re trying to take over the jungle with their robots, and start the roboapocalypse!” said Sticks.

“The roboapocalypse?” Amy said with a confused look

“So… let me get this straight: You’re nervous because some people with robots are here and they’re trying to start an apocaplyse where the bots take over and they’re building their base here?” Katelyn asked.

“Yes! Those strange people and their big strange devices know too much about the mumbo jumbo stuff with science!” said Sticks.

“Whoa! Calm down! Please don’t yell!” said Amy.

‘Boy, I must have been like this a lot as a kid…’ thought Kate.

“Okay. Okay Sticks. I get it, you’re stressed out over all this, but don’t sweat it. I’ll get those dumb holes out of the jungle so they’ll leave your home alone,” said Katelyn.

“You will?” asked Sticks.

“Yes. I’m always there to help a friend,” Katelyn said with a smile.

Sticks looked overjoyed by what Katelyn just said.

“Friend. I never thought I’d find a friend someday…” she said with a warm smile.

She ran over to Katelyn and Amy and gave them tight hugs.

“Chocking… not breathing…” said Amy weakly.

‘Yeah… I was like this when I was her age…’ thought Katelyn.

Meanwhile, Sonic wasn’t doing too good trying to shake off the robot. It followed him until he got to a more open terrain.

“Now that there’s more space, it’s time to break that stupid face of yours!” Sonic shouted at the robot. He turned to face it, but as he did, Sonic heard a familiar, evil laugh come from behind him.

“Well, well, well,” said a second voice.

“Of course…” Sonic muttered with an unamused look as he turned around.

Sure enough, Bowser and Dr. Eggman appeared in the Eggmobile buggy. They were acompanined by Orbot and Cubot.

“We’ve got a bone to pick with you, because of what happened back at the mountain…” Orbot said, possibly in a dark tone.

“It all ends here old friend. Now… prepare to be destroyed, by BurnBot!” said Eggman. He pointed to the robot that Sonic and the others had trouble with before.

But as far as Sonic knew, the robot didn’t have any real fire powered weapons with it. Only its claws, and he was going to use this to screw with them for a minute.

“So what? Is he gonna burn me with flamethrowers or something?” he said with a smirk.

The grin left from Eggman’s face and the doc said, “Uh… flamethrowers? No…”

“Oh! Then acid? Incinerating grenades?” Sonic said, continuing to screw with Eggman.

“No just his claws! His very painful claws!” Eggman snapped at him.

“Then you should’ve named him ‘Clawbot’, or ‘Delaserator’ or… ‘Pinch-a-tron 5000’ but Burnbot? That’s just false advertising-” said Sonic.

“Whatever! Name the robot Sonic! Burnbot, destroy him!” Bowser shouted, interrupting Sonic’s mischief.

Sonics spun his head around to see that Burnbot was charging for him. He bolted out of the way, and when the robot tried to grab him by extending one of its arms, it missed again.

“Oops! You missed me!” Sonic said in a taunting tone.

The blue hedgehog spun around and began to prep a homing attack. Sonic tried to attack the robot, but it extended one of its arms and smacked him to the side.

“Ow!” cried Sonic, as he hit a tree.

“Sonic!” cried a voice.

Mario and Luigi came over to help. Both of them were powered up by fire flowers and started to throw fire balls at the robot. However, the fire balls didn’t make even a dent in the robots armor.

“Oh come on!” snapped Mario.

Burnbot responded to Mario by smacking him and Luigi to the side.

“Hey butt head!” cried another voice.

Tails, Knuckles, Yoshi, and Peach arrived. Knuckles charged for the robot, while Yoshi tried to spit out some fruits at the robot to attack. Burnbot only knocked over Knuckles, deflected Yoshi’s attacks, and grabbed Tails again.

“What is it with you grabbing me!?” shouted Tails.

Burnbot threw the poor fox aside, and picked up Peach and handed her to Bowser.

“Hey Princes…” Bowser said with a grin when he got Peach in his arms.

Peach only gave him an angry look and said, “I hate you…” in a dark tone.

“Give it up! Burnbot has metal made of iron, and it’s fast with its strong arms!” Eggman said with an evil laugh.

“And yet, you didn’t add even a single flamethrower to fit it’s pathetic name…” said yet another voice.

It was Katelyn and Amy, who arrived with unamused looks on their faces.

“Well, well, well. Here to fall like your friends?” said Eggman.

“I’d like to see your bot even try to attack me…” said Katelyn in a bored tone.

“Uh Kate?” asked Amy.

“Trust me…” Katelyn whispered to her.

“Burnbot, attack her!” Eggman shouted.

Burnbot turned its attention to Katelyn, but before it could finish extending its arm to her, it stopped, and turned around to look at its surroundings.

Four minutes later…

“Staples! Why aren’t you fighting my robot and just standing there?!” Eggman angrily shouted at her.

“Because… this metal idiot doesn’t even want to pay attention to me,” Katelyn snapped at him.

This was true. Burnbot was looking around, because something must have hit it on the back of the head or something and made it turn its focus to find who or what hit it. As a result, Burnbot completely forgot about its order to fight Katelyn.

“Hello!? I’m over here!” Katelyn shouted at the robot.

Burnbot still didn’t’ turn around, and while Bowser and Eggman stood in the Eggmobile buggy with their jaws dropped, Mario, Sonic, and the rest of the guys were laughing hard over the matter with the robot. Peach, on the other hand, noticed that Bowser let his grip go on her, so the Princess got away from him and began to run away.

“Hey! Don’t you dare run awa-” Bowser began to say.

However, the Koopa King was cut off, because something hit him on the back of the head.

“What the-?!” Eggman tried to say, but he to, got hit on the head by whatever hit Bowser.

It was a boomerang, and it was Sticks who threw it. In fact, she threw her boomerang at Burnbot so that everything that happened would happen, all according to Katelyn’s plan.

“That’s for attacking my home and replacing my plants with your weird hunks of junk!” she shouted at them.

Finally calming down over laughing at the robot issue, Mario and Sonic were ready to finish off Burnbot. Mario tossed Sonic and ring, and the blue hedgehog spun around again. As Sonic began to spin around, Mario prepared to toss another fireball, which Sonic jumped into.

“Time for ‘Morning Star’ Mode!” said Mario.

He tossed the fireball and combined with Sonic’s power from the ring, the guys destroyed Burnbot with that single toss. Burnbot got a piercing hole from the impact it got from Sonic, and blew up seconds later.

“My robot!” Eggman shouted.

“Now his name fits him perfectly. He’s burning to the ground!” Amy shouted at the villains.

The team wasn’t done with the villains yet. Mario and Luigi threw some fireballs at Orbot and Cubot, Amy, Peach, and Katelyn used some of their gear to go after Bowser, while Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles chased after Eggman to pin him down. Sticks helped out by throwing a boomerang at Eggman so that he’d slow down and the guys could catch him.

“This isn’t over!” shouted Bowser.

He snapped his fingers and a blue streak came from out of nowhere. It was Metal Sonic. The robot made a beeping sound, but a black streak came out and attacked Metal. Metal was sent flying to a tree and got knocked out after hitting the tree.

Shadow arrived to help them. Like the guys, he was wearing some sports tape around his ankles and wrists. He was also wearing some slightly different shoes than he normally wore. He looked at Bowser, Eggman, and the robots, pulled out his gun, pointed it at them, and said, “Now get lost before I pull the trigger.”

The villains didn’t dare argue with him. They all ran away in panic, with Eggman being the only one shouting something back at them.

“We’ll be back, with a new robot! Who has super laser arms! And he’ll feed us ham! Evil ham!” the doctor shouted at them as they ran off.

“Yeah… one of the worst comebacks I’ve heard…” said Sonic.

“Glad that’s over, but Shadow, why did you come out here?” asked Tails.

“Rouge and the others were worried about you guys. You’ve been gone longer than we thought, so I decided to come out here just in case,” Shadow explained.

“At least those creeps are finally out of the jungle. They were replacing all the plants here with their strange stuff,” said Sticks.

“Maybe they were trying to build a base out here, especially after…” Sonic said nervously.

“After what?” asked Amy.

Sonic, Mario, and Katelyn became quiet. They didn’t want to let their friends know that a few days ago, they were playing with explosives with Manic and decided to blow up Bowser and Eggman’s current base. At least, now wasn’t a good time to point that out.

“We’ll explain when we get home,” said Mario.

“Well, no Chaos Emeralds out here, but we did drive the bad guys out,” said Yoshi.

“Guess we should head home,” said Katelyn. Then she turned to Sticks and said, “You wanna come over to the tree house for a bit?”

Sticks looked happy with the fact that she was invited to a friend’s house.

“Really? I’d loved to! Because I’m a good friend and you’re a good friend!” she said cheerfully.

Later that day, the team decided to have a bonfire outside the tree house. They all cooked some marshmallows and made some s’mores with that. They laughed, told each other jokes, and even made up some scary stories when it got dark enough.

“Once there was a singer named Justin Bieber… he sung so awful that everyone died! The end!” Sonic said for his scary story.

Of course, everyone laughed over this one. It wasn’t scary, but they all certainly didn’t like the celebrity in the story.

“Who’s this Justin?” asked Sticks, who was the only one who didn’t laugh (of course).

“We’ll tell you another time,” Katelyn said with a smile.

Right now, it was time to celebrate. Not only did they prevent Bowser and Eggman from tearing down a jungle to make their base, but they made a new friend and member to theig big team: Sticks the Badger.
